For many, the first sign is a sudden, gripping pain in the upper abdomen after a rich meal. For others, gallstones are discovered by chance during a routine ultrasound and never cause any trouble at all. Understanding the difference between these situations is the key to knowing whether you simply need to watch and wait, or whether it is time to consider surgery.

What Are Gallstones?

The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ that sits just under the liver. Its job is to store bile, a digestive fluid the liver produces to help break down fatty food. When the chemical balance of bile is disturbed, tiny crystals can form and slowly clump together into solid stones. These stones can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a marble, and a person may have one large stone or dozens of small ones.

Most gallstones in India are cholesterol stones, formed when bile contains too much cholesterol. Others are pigment stones, linked to conditions that affect the blood. Whatever their type, the trouble usually begins when a stone moves and blocks the narrow outlet of the gallbladder or the bile duct.

Why Are Indians at Higher Risk?

Gallstones are remarkably common in India, particularly across the northern and eastern states, but they affect people in Chennai too. Several factors increase the risk, and many of them are becoming more common with changing lifestyles. Women are affected far more often than men, especially after the age of 40, partly because of the influence of female hormones and pregnancy.

The classic risk factors are often summarised as the “four Fs”: female, fertile (having had children), forty, and overweight. Beyond these, a diet high in refined carbohydrates and saturated fat, rapid weight loss, diabetes, and a family history of gallstones all raise the likelihood of developing them.

Symptoms You Should Not Ignore

Many people carry gallstones for years without knowing it. When symptoms do appear, they tend to follow a recognisable pattern. The warning signs to watch for include:

Pain in the upper right or upper middle part of the abdomen, often coming on after a fatty or heavy meal

Pain that travels to the back or to the right shoulder blade

Nausea or vomiting that accompanies the pain

A bloated, uncomfortable feeling and difficulty tolerating oily or fried foods

Fever with chills, which can signal infection of the gallbladder

Yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice) and dark urine, which suggest a stone has slipped into the bile duct

Jaundice, fever, and severe persistent pain are not symptoms to manage at home. They point to complications such as an inflamed gallbladder, a blocked bile duct, or pancreatitis, and they need prompt medical attention.

When Can You Simply Watch and Wait?

Not every gallstone needs to be removed. If stones are found incidentally and have never caused any symptoms, surgery is usually not recommended. These “silent” stones can often be left alone and monitored, since the risk of them ever causing problems is low. In this situation, a sensible diet and regular follow-up are generally enough.

The picture changes once gallstones begin to cause pain or complications. Once symptoms start, they tend to return and often become more frequent or severe over time. There is no reliable medicine that dissolves gallstones permanently, and home remedies do not make them disappear. For symptomatic gallstones, the safest and most definitive treatment is removal of the gallbladder.

Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: The Modern Solution

Removing the gallbladder is called a cholecystectomy, and today it is almost always done by keyhole, or laparoscopic, surgery. Instead of one large cut, the surgeon makes a few tiny incisions and uses a camera and fine instruments to remove the gallbladder. Losing the gallbladder does not harm digestion in the long term, because bile simply flows directly from the liver into the intestine.

The advantages of the laparoscopic approach are significant: less pain after surgery, very small scars, a shorter hospital stay, and a much faster return to normal life. Most patients go home within a day or two and resume their usual routine within a week. Because the operation prevents future attacks and serious complications, it offers lasting relief for people troubled by gallstones.

Recovering After Surgery

Recovery from laparoscopic gallbladder surgery is usually smooth. In the first few days, light meals and gentle activity are encouraged. Most people can return to desk work within a week and to more strenuous activity within a few weeks. A small number of patients notice loose stools or mild fat intolerance initially, which typically settles as the body adjusts. Following your surgeon’s dietary advice during this period makes the transition easier.

Worried About Gallstones?

If you have been diagnosed with gallstones or are experiencing upper abdominal pain after meals, a timely consultation can help you understand your options and avoid complications. Dr. Gautham Krishnamurthy, surgical gastroenterologist at P&G Hospital, Chennai, offers expert evaluation and laparoscopic gallbladder surgery.

For appointments, contact reception.

Gallstones treatment in Chennai: know the symptoms, who is at risk, when watchful waiting is safe, and how laparoscopic surgery gives lasting relief.

[38
32,33,39,40,41
post-257","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-gallbladder-disorders","tag-cholecystectomy","tag-gallbladder","tag-gallstones","tag-laparoscopic-surgery","tag-surgical-gastroenterology
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
